Our Story

Park Royal United Church's story began in the 1950s. At the time, Trinity United Church in downtown Charlottetown was overflowing with people. To meet the needs of families living east of the railway tracks — in Parkdale, Central Royalty, and East Royalty — Rev. Frank MacLean suggested forming a new congregation.

That suggestion took root quickly. In May 1957, a meeting was held to establish a new pastoral charge, and later that year nearly 250 people signed the charter roll. Rev. Howard Christie became interim moderator, and the name "Park Royal" was chosen thanks to a suggestion by Martha Johnston Brook; "Park" from Parkdale and "Royal" from the Royalties. Land for the new church was generously donated by G. Stewart MacKay, and on June 22, 1958, the cornerstone was laid. Rev. J.M. Sheen, chair of Presbytery, presided at the opening service, and soon after, the first minister, Rev. Burton Crowe, was called. A manse followed in 1960, dedicated to serve the growing community.

From the start, Park Royal was filled with life and energy. As the only Protestant church in the area, it quickly became a hub for worship, learning, and connection. Sunday School classes and mid-week programs grew so large that neighbours opened their homes to host them. It was a season of building — not just a church, but a community of faith and friendship that still shapes us today.

More than sixty years later, Park Royal United Church continues to grow from this rich history. Guided by our mission to live with love, justice, and compassion, and inspired by our vision to be a community where all can grow in faith, hope, and service, we are committed to living out Christ's call in meaningful ways. At present, our faith community is moving forward in love, curiosity, and learning as we journey toward becoming an Affirming Congregation through Affirm United.

We remain deeply rooted in community life, maintaining close connections with local music ensembles, community organizations, sports teams, and beyond. Whether through gathering, music, fellowship, or service, Park Royal is a welcoming community where you are invited to belong, to share, and to grow in faith together.
